Oginos and CORE (Japan)
KAGUYA HIME 'The Moon Princess'
The "Oginos and CORE" is an award-winning youth contemporary dance company from Sanda, Japan. Established by directors KAYOKO & YUSHI OGINO in 1993, their dance performances have a unique contemporary style, based on classical and modern ballet. The performances are very complex and have deep meanings, sometimes mixed with "Theatre", "Recitation", "Mathematics" or "Modern Art".

"KAGUYA HIME", the oldest Japanese fairy tale, is the story of a girl discovered in bamboo and her affinity with the Moon. "Oginos and CORE" presents it in very contemporary style. A delight for children and adults alike; spiritual and mysterious.

This is a marvellous world, full of beauty and splendour; it is also an unrelenting and savage world, and we are not the only living things prone to dominate if given the chance. In our fumbling, chaotic way, we do also make gardens, irrigate the desert, fly to the moon and compose symphonies. Some of us are trying to save species other than ourselves...

Ballet and dance with a dash of Japanese flavour

The Moon Princess is a nicely danced combination of ballet and modern dance, with a dash of Japanese flavour. The myth upon which it is based is not evident in the dance, so the programme is worth reading.

A very young company, it is a delight to see smiles coming through what are supposed to be neutral expressions at the parts some dancers particularly enjoy.

I was entertained, relaxed and refreshed.
