Unusual take on the life of Nell Gwyn
Playhouse Creatures is an unusual take on the life of Nell Gwyn and other women involved in theatre in the 17th century. It is mainly a light comedy: I found myself smiling most of the way through and some audience members laughed out loud. It does have its poignant moments too, however, and we are reminded of how fickle fortune could be to these women, who depended on their good looks and luck to make a living.
It took me a few minutes at the beginning to understand what was going on, but after that, the storyline flowed. The acting was very good and I liked the costumes, which gave an air of opulence on an otherwise very simple set. Very enjoyable.
